Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles
June 29, 2008
DIALOGUE AND PREFACE
As was discussed earlier, the Dialogue that introduces the Eucharistic Prayer is taken verbatim from introductories to Jewish prayer, especially meal prayers. The lifting up of the heart and the giving of thanks and praise being the ultimate sacrifice possible after the destruction of the Jewish temple, both at the time of the Exile, six centuries before Christ, and in the first century of the Christian era when the Temple of Herod was destroyed by the Roman legions.
What is so very important to affirm at the beginning is that the Dialogue by its very nature, with presider and congregation alternating a conversation in prayer, establishes that the Eucharistic Prayer is the Prayer of the whole Assembly. All pray it according to their roles in the worshipping community. At no time is this, or any other liturgical prayer, to be seen as belonging only to the presider. Indeed, he will proclaim large portions of the prayer, speaking as it were with the single voice of the Christ in whom all pray. But, all along, the Assembly interjects their rightful acclamations and affirmations to what is being prayed. The Prayer is theirs, for they, too, are of Christ.
Each Preface reveals at once the place Jesus has in the Prayer of his Church. All the praise and thanks that is given by her is given through him. And it will be some specific aspect of Christ that forms the basis for all that will follow. From the outset, the prayer will say exactly why, on this occasion, the Church gives thanks: ...he fulfilled the plan formed long ago and open the way to salvation (Advent I)...in him a new light has dawned upon the world (Christmas III)...his fast of forty days makes this a holy season of self-denial (Lent Sunday I)...in him a new age has dawned, the long reign of sin is ended (Easter IV)...in him who rose from the dead, our hope of resurrection dawned (Christian Death I). And so on for almost a hundred separate occasions. In one way or another some aspect of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus is highlighted that it might shed light in turn upon his Church, that imitates him in everything. His Death will speak to our pain and suffering, our fears, our broken hearts, our deaths. His Resurrection will speak of our love and joy, our peace, our shared friendships and successes, our rising to new life.
There is no aspect of our lives that can not be touched by Christ's life, no part of our hopes and dreams that cannot be joined to his. It is the mystery of the Incarnation taking flesh not only in Jesus of Nazareth but in his brothers and sisters. God is near; as close as he can be this side of heaven.
Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles
On October 12, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated the "Bronze Door," the nearly 400-year-old but newly refurbished principal entrance to the Vatican Apostolic Palace in Rome. In his remarks, the Holy Father said, "this door assumes a symbolic and spiritual significance. Those who come to meet Peter’s successor pass through here." It is Benedict’s hope that those who pass through these doors will feel his embrace.
Jesus asks his disciples two very important questions: Who do the people say the Son of Man is, and who do you say that I am? Imagine Jesus’ joy in Peter’s response – "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Peter didn’t hesitate in speaking from his heart, and was rewarded with the embrace of Jesus Christ and the authority to govern the Church. What can we learn from Peter’s immediate, heartfelt response?
When we recite the Apostles’ Creed, we renew to ourselves our mission as members of the Church to be apostolic, to carry out the message of Christ’s love to the world (CCC 863). Just as Peter was acknowledged for his true faith received from God, and just as Paul and the apostles traveled throughout the land, we are called to know the gift of God’s grace, and to share our gift whenever and wherever possible.
