Grades 1 through 8 participated in the Delaware County Reading Council and the Delaware County Intermediate Unit's All Delco Reads Program 2017. This program is designed to engage readers to read well-crafted literature in order to heighten interest in reading and to involve students in meaningful discussions and activities related to the books. This is our school's third year in the program.
The theme for this year is overcoming adversity. Students in each grade were assigned a book to read about someone who had challenges or disabilities.
Grades 1 through 5 were assigned the book Emmanual's Dream, written by Laurie Ann Thompson and Sean Qualls. This story is about a young boy born with a deformed leg who overcomes the odds with the help of his mother. He shows others he can play soccer and cycle without anyone's help or accommodations.
Grades 6, 7, and 8 read the story Freak the Mighty, written by Rodman Philbrick. This story is about a young boy named Kevin, aka Freak, who is a genius with a serious birth defect that has left him with braces and crutches. With the help of his new friend, Maxwell, they become an invincible duo.
Students in each grade have worked on projects highlighting the theme of each story that they read. Grades 1 to 3 made acrostics and cited inspirational phrases that made them think of Emmanuel and his journey. Grades 4 and 5 have displayed Venn Diagrams using Emmanuel and some family member or freind that has had to fuction with a disability and how they persevered. Grades 6, 7, and 8 designed a Superhero Wall with some famous characters you will recognize. They have also incorporated the two main characters from their story - Maxell carrying Kevin on his shoulders.
